City of Las Cruces

The City of Las Cruces will develop a recreational trail to link the community of Tortugas and Doña Ana County with key local destinations, including the university campus and Las Cruces High School. This initiative, guided by the Las Cruces Active Transportation Plan and the City’s Parks & Recreation Master Plan, seeks to enhance safe, convenient, and accessible transportation and recreation for residents and visitors in collaboration with the Elephant Butte Irrigation District (EBID) and New Mexico State University (NMSU).

The proposed 80-acre urban bike park aims to provide an inclusive and interactive space for all levels of riders, including adaptive riders, with a range of facilities such as a National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) course, adaptive-friendly trails, and a special Niños Circuit for children and less experienced riders. Designed with the community in mind, the park will also feature ADA-compliant restrooms, shade areas, picnic facilities, secure bike storage, observation points, and potentially solar-powered lighting for extended summer hours, all while prioritizing safety and accessibility throughout. Making full use of the favorable climate, this project strives to create an engaging, inclusive, and sustainable community space not just for cyclists, but for their families and the wider community.
