The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum's Abiquiú Garden Project is a youth-oriented summer endeavor that offers paid internships to high school students, particularly from rural, low-income, or underrepresented backgrounds in Rio Arriba County, Georgia for immersive learning, mentorship, and community-building. The program not only imparts practical skills such as sustainable agriculture, nutrition, and cultural preservation, but also nurtures leadership, teamwork, self-expression, and a sense of belonging. Participants spend their summer outdoors, culminating in a Harvest Celebration where the produce they've grown is donated to local food banks, reinforcing their connection to their community. This direct, hands-on approach fosters personal growth, bolsters confidence and introduces career pathways while enhancing the well-being of the wider community.
