The Enduring Acequia program focuses on training a new generation of parciantes, commissioners, and Mayordomos in the maintenance and efficient management of the Vado de Juan Paiz acequia, crucial for enhancing regional food security. In its second year, the program will incorporate technology through the use of drones, GPS mapping, and field cameras, while actively engaging participants in hands-on monitoring and upkeep of the 13-mile irrigation system.
The Enduring Acequia program will train a new generation of parciantes (irrigation community members), commissioners, and Mayordomos (water managers) in the management and preservation of the Vado de Juan Paiz acequia. This initiative promotes sustainable practices that bolster food security in the local community while fostering appreciation for vital irrigation systems.
In 2020, our volunteer staff built a full campground on the farm property with tent sites, glamping tent, vintage trailer, kitchen/hall, composting toilet, signage, lights and running water. In 2020 we began the Enduring Acequia program thanks to a 2020 Outdoor Equity Fund grant. Three years in a row, we organized La Limpia (the annual communal cleaning of the ditch), and this year, our Outdoor Equity Fund program participants were integral to the success of the clean-up.
