The Bike Works Adventure Program empowers underserved youth in Grant County to become lifelong outdoor enthusiasts and responsible environmental stewards by providing bicycle education and ownership, outdoor recreation experiences, and repair workshops held in the Indoor-Outdoor Learning Hub. Through collaborating with the Bike Hub and Outdoor Equity funding, the program transforms community-donated bicycles into personal transportation, recreational, and exploration tools, while also fostering essential life skills and stronger community relations. The participants' journey, from learning about bicycle safety to completing an overnight bikepacking expedition, culminates in lasting investments in young individuals by ensuring continuity of access to resources for maintenance and further exploration even beyond the program's duration.

Founded in 2008, The Bike Works is a Silver City-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to improving lives through bicycles, education, and outdoor recreation. Our mission is to remove barriers to cycling by providing hands-on bicycle repair education, safe riding instruction, and access to reliable transportation and recreation for people of all ages and backgrounds. At the heart of our work is our Earn-A-Bike program, where youth and adults volunteer one hour for each year of their age (up to 12 hours) while learning bicycle maintenance, safety, and responsibility. Upon completing the program, participants earn a bicycle to refurbish themselves, gaining the skills, confidence, and sense of ownership that come from restoring and maintaining their own bike. Graduates also receive a helmet and lock. Beyond Earn-A-Bike, we offer weekly community workshops, guided group rides, and outdoor recreation opportunities that build confidence, practical skills, and lifelong connections to cycling. For nearly two decades, The Bike Works has collaborated with the Town of Silver City, local schools, service organizations, and other community partners to promote healthy, active transportation and expand equitable access to outdoor recreation. As a trusted community resource, we have introduced thousands of residents to bicycling while fostering mechanical skills, environmental stewardship, and a stronger sense of belonging. The Bike Works operates independently as an educational nonprofit and does not function as a bicycle repair business. Instead, we empower participants with the knowledge and tools to maintain their own bicycles, creating self-sufficiency while helping make outdoor recreation more accessible throughout Grant County.
