New Mexico Interscholastic Cycling League, NMICL, is often referred to as NM NICA (a chapter of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association-NICA), is a nonprofit organization focused on youth development through cross-country mountain biking. We are reinventing youth sporting activities by modeling inclusive and equitable programming that provides space for all middle and high school youth to develop. Our mission is to support students in building strong bodies, minds, character and communities through cycling, and our vision is for every youth to be part of a thriving cycling community. We strive to cultivate lifelong cyclists and outdoor stewards. We have no tryouts, there is no bench, everyone rides. Many coaches are parents. Families participate together. Every NICA experience is fostering a supportive and healthy community. NM NICA launched in 2022 with 3 statewide events, by the end of the year we had 212 students participate in local programming and statewide events. In 2023 we hosted 6 statewide events with 222 students participating throughout the year. Of those 222 students, 56 of them received full to partial scholarships to cover the cost of participation through our 2023 Outdoor Equity Fund Grant. An additional 17 students received full scholarships for participation as well as a new bicycle and helmet, through our collaboration with Trek Bikes. The high percentage of scholarships illuminates the needs of our community, 33% of our participating student-athletes needed some assistance to participate. We are focused on decreasing barriers to cycling and will continue to offer a scholarship program for participation fees. We will continue partnering with bike companies to provide the necessary gear and bikes to students who don’t have the equipment.
