Santa Fe Botanical Garden

The Santa Fe Botanical Garden (SFBG), founded in 1987, is a private nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the rich botanical heritage and biodiversity of our region. Our first phase opened to the public in July 2013, offering educational programs and exhibits focused on regional plants, gardens, and ecosystems. The Garden stands alongside four other cultural institutions on Museum Hill. SFBG’s mission emphasizes education, science, conservation, community service, and the sustainable management of its public garden. Three distinct garden areas, each with its unique character and educational opportunities, showcase native plants alongside narratives of cultural history and ecological significance. Orchard Gardens: These gardens combine horticultural and architectural elements, featuring native and adapted plants chosen for their beauty and resilience in the Santa Fe climate. Visitors here can gain a sense for regional garden style and plant choices. The central fruit orchard highlights trees valued for food and beauty in the Southwest for many generations. Ojos y Manos: Eyes and Hands: This ethnobotanical garden tells the story of the region’s relationship with plants, from ancient Pueblo and Spanish peoples to contemporary communities. Youth interns tend agricultural terraces, contributing to local food banks and embodying sustainable gardening practices and community involvement. Piñon Juniper Woodland: This natural area tells the story of New Mexico’s primary ecosystem and its ecological, cultural, and economic importance. Walking trails provide opportunities for nature exploration and reflection. SFBG attracts visitors from across the state, the country, and the globe. Guests of all ages, from dedicated botanists to tourists curious about our natural history, enjoy the walking trails and beautiful garden spaces. Since leasing the original 11-acre site in 2006, the Garden has expanded to 19 acres, including 8 acres of gardens as well as open space in the Arroyo de los Pinos. Visitor numbers have grown significantly, from 9,966 in 2013 to 28,093 in 2023, despite challenges posed by COVID-19. The Garden remained open during most of the pandemic, providing visitors a safe outdoor space for recreation and contemplation. In 2023, SFBG celebrated its 10th anniversary milestone, marking a decade since the opening of the Orchard Gardens. Plans for expansion include the development of new restrooms and a Children’s Discovery Garden (CDG), funded through capital outlay funds and community support. SFBG has received recognition as the Best Nonprofit for the Environment in Santa Fe in multiple years, reflecting its impact and significance within the community. Programs and activities at SFBG cater to visitors of all ages and interests, including public docent tours, school field trips, adult education programs, renowned speakers on nature and ecology, collaborative initiatives with indigenous artists, community science projects, seasonal events, and outdoor art exhibits. Through its gardens, educational programs, and community engagement efforts, SFBG continues to enrich the lives of visitors while promoting conservation and cultural appreciation.
