Anansi Charter School is a state-authorized public charter school located in El Prado, New Mexico, serving students in Pre-K through eighth grade. Founded in 2001, Anansi has provided innovative, student-centered education to children and families throughout northern New Mexico for more than 25 years. Our mission is to develop the academic potential and emotional intelligence of every learner through engaging instruction, innovative educational practices, and strong family and community partnerships. As a rural school, Anansi is committed to ensuring that every student has equitable access to enriching educational experiences that foster academic achievement, social-emotional development, and lifelong wellness. Our educational model integrates place-based learning, outdoor education, restorative practices, social-emotional learning, and project-based instruction to help students become confident, compassionate, and engaged learners. Anansi operates as a Community School, working collaboratively with local organizations to provide expanded learning opportunities, integrated student supports, and meaningful family engagement. Through partnerships with organizations such as FITaos, Taos Land Trust, Youth Heartline, and other community partners, students participate in authentic learning experiences that connect classroom learning with the natural and cultural resources of northern New Mexico. The school is primarily funded through state public education allocations and competitive federal, state, and private grants. Recent accomplishments include expanding community school programming, launching a Pre-K program, strengthening literacy and mathematics intervention systems, and increasing opportunities for outdoor learning, environmental stewardship, and student leadership through community partnerships.
