Arroyo Seco Community Center
Grants Awarded
The Native Plants and Fitness Loop project aims to build an interactive open-air space around the Arroyo Seco, Des Montes, and Valdez community center for physical activity, environmental learning, and community bonding. The trail, constructed from compacted crusher fines, will be surrounded with local flora selected and provided by the Taos Native Plant Society, while cisterns and exercise stations installed by volunteers will support plant growth and physical fitness respectively. The project intends to offer volunteer opportunities for trail preparation and installation work, enhancing community center usage and promoting unity.
Arroyo Seco Community Center (ASCC), within the past 3 years, has reopened due to community interest. The center serves Arroyo Seco, Des Montes and the Valdez communities. Since reopening a board of directors was formed, use agreements with Taos County were made, outdoor play structures with appropriate surfaces were installed, fruit trees were planted, an horno was built, shade structures through a grant from Kit Carson were built, two fall festivals have been held and a weekly Sunday Community Market has been established. ASCC has recently been asked by the county to participate in a state funded grant to build stronger communities with networking as its focus. ASCC is one of several community centers to participate. ASCC’s vision is to enhance the quality of life of our community by protecting its agricultural, environmental, cultural and historic aspects through educational, recreational and social opportunities.
