The Chiricahua Apache National Foundation's Project Horse Holders offers underprivileged youth a transformative four-day experience focused on horse care, culminating in a 2.5-day overnight pack trip into the Gila Wilderness. Participants gain confidence in horse riding, develop survival skills, and acquire knowledge about historical, spiritual, and environmental stewardship, empowering them to become knowledgeable advocates for this sacred indigenous landscape.

Total Grants Awarded: $20,000

We have recovered land in our traditional and ancestral territory and initiated the process for federal recognition and trust. We have acquired a HQ at Fort Bayard, Bayard, NM, a military installation originally built to house US soldiers sent to massacre the Chiricahua Apache. We helped pass a bill to protect the Gila River in the Gila Forest, and have negotiated to extend usufructuary rights and joint management agreements to facilitate use and enjoyment and stewardship of natural resources.
