In partnership with Nature Niños, Moriarty Elementary plans to initiate an outdoor learning program for all fifth-grade students in the 2026-2027 school year, tackling rural limitations to outdoor recreation. The program will facilitate equitable outdoor access, foster students' outdoor competence and environment-oriented stewardship skills, and promote well-being through routine, relationship-oriented outdoor experiences. Utilizing funding from the Outdoor Equity Fund, the curriculum includes both on-campus and off-campus activities such as nature observation, outdoor safety education, small-scale stewardship tasks, and local ecology immersion. The long-term outcomes for students include enhanced confidence in outdoor settings, a heightened understanding of local ecosystems, and a stronger environmental connection. The program also provides the school with a tried-and-tested model for integrating outdoor learning in subsequent years.

Total Grants Awarded: $10,000

The school supports a diverse student population, with a significant proportion of students qualifying for free or reduced-price meals and requiring additional academic, behavioral, and social-emotional supports. Moriarty Elementary has been operating as a community school for five years, intentionally integrating academics, health services, family engagement, and community partnerships to address barriers to student success. Recent accomplishments include the establishment of a School-Based Health Center serving students and staff, expanded access to mental health supports, and the development of partnerships that provide wraparound services and enrichment opportunities. These efforts have reinforced the school’s commitment to equity, whole-child development, and long-term student success.
