Through thoughtfully curated programs, benefiting from Board members’ expertise in outdoor adventure and community engagement, participants are expected to gain physical fitness, mental well-being, and new skills, while their immersive nature experiences encourage environmental stewardship. Integrating financial support and accessibility measures, such as Disability Awareness and adaptive programing training for guides, also forms a fundamental part of the program’s structure.

Outdoor Gateways is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit established in 2023. Founded on the belief that adventure recreation can transform lives for the better, the mission of Outdoor Gateways (OG) is to facilitate outdoor recreation opportunities for marginalized communities, while supporting personal growth and environmental stewardship. OG offers rock climbing and snowshoeing programs for youth, engaging participants in activity-based experiential education. Our approach fosters both personal growth and an appreciation of the natural world by encouraging participants to face challenges that build self-esteem and forge a connection with the outdoors. Although Outdoor Gateways is newly formed, the organization draws on the experience of its founders, two of whom have operated a rock-climbing guide service in the Taos area since 1994. These individuals have collaborated with community leaders to provide recreational rock-climbing experiences for area youth. Their work highlighted the need for financial support to break down the socioeconomic barriers that would allow all to participate. Together, the five members of our board provide a wealth of experience in facilitating programs and education for local communities, including rural, tribal, and low-income populations. By providing accessible and inclusive outdoor experiences, OG seeks to bridge the gap that often exists between these communities and the natural world. Many marginalized groups face significant barriers to participating in outdoor recreation, including financial constraints, lack of access to natural spaces, and limited exposure to outdoor activities. OG addresses these challenges by offering programs that are specifically designed to be inclusive and supportive, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their background or abilities, can experience the benefits of nature. Each program is structured to include environmental education components that teach participants about local ecosystems, conservation practices, and the impact of human activity on the environment. This hands-on learning approach helps foster a deeper connection to nature and an understanding of the importance of preserving it. OG is passionate about sharing adventure recreation with others because we recognize that participation in outdoor activities provides many benefits beyond physical health. Outdoor activities are well-documented to aid in stress relief, enhance self-confidence, build self-esteem, and reduce symptoms of depression. Engaging with nature through adventure recreation offers participants not only the opportunity to improve their physical health and fitness, but also to experience psychological and emotional benefits. Activities such as rock climbing and snowshoeing present unique challenges that foster personal growth. These activities require participants to overcome obstacles, navigate unfamiliar terrain, and push their limits, which in turn helps to build resilience, confidence, and self-esteem. As participants tackle these challenges, they gain a sense of personal achievement and growth. The process of setting and achieving goals, facing fears, and mastering new skills in a supportive and encouraging environment contributes to their overall well-being and personal development. By connecting with nature and experiencing the thrill of adventure, individuals develop a stronger sense of self and a more positive outlook on life, enriching their mental and emotional health.
