Rio Grande Restoration dba Surf NM
Grants Awarded
The proposed river park on the Rio Grande near Velarde is designed to enhance recreational opportunities and improve community access to nature. By incorporating features such as boat ramps, restrooms, a surf wave, and a bicycle/walking bridge, the project aims to foster outdoor activities and promote healthier lifestyles among participants, while also preserving the area's historical significance.
Surf NM is a group dedicated to promoting and sharing information about river surfing in New Mexico. Surf NM was involved in development of a surf wave constructed on the Rio Chama below Abiquiu Dam. That project brought support from NM Department of Game and Fish and the US Army Corps of Engineers, as well as considerable support from the boating community, including the Adobe Whitewater Club. We have strong support from the local fly fishing community for the Velarde River Park. Local businesses including four local wineries, a brewery, and the Dixon Coop market also strongly support this project. The New Mexico Paddlers Coalition also strongly supports this project.
