Through signage, our project is to promote a network of recreational and economic opportunities along the Animas and San Juan River trails by not only promoting them as a recreational destination, but also providing the opportunity to enhance the river access and educate users about proper water safety and appropriate skill levels in various areas of the two rivers. Currently, the present signage is only directional to where river access is located. In order to promote the rivers as safe and enjoyable recreational destinations, it is necessary to provide additional signage using specific common verbiage at put in locations and on bridges along both the Animas River at Penny Lane in Flora Vista, NM to the confluence of the two rivers at Westland Park in Farmington, NM and from McGee Park in San Juan County on the San Juan River to the confluence of the rivers and on to Lion’s Park in Kirtland, NM. The signage will define river information and rules, mapping information that clarifies river miles between access points, areas where egress is and is not permitted, hazard zones and rapids, length of segments with recreational skill levels, and areas where floating and/or tubing is or is not appropriate.
