San Miguel County
Grants Awarded
The Sabinoso Wilderness's extraordinary landscape, which includes the Cañon Ciruela and Spring Cañon, provides unique opportunities for outdoor recreation and community health improvement, inhibited only by limited public access. To rectify this, an easement on the wilderness’s northern side has been negotiated, involving the rerouting of a trail over state land and a $280,000 Bureau of Land Management (BLM) contribution towards the construction of a 1.1-mile gravel road, a trailhead with an educational kiosk, a parking area, and a 0.76-mile wilderness trail. The completion of this infrastructure project will not only increase equitable access to the wilderness but also maximize the economic and ecological potential of the area.
San Miguel County is a local government entity, tasked with providing fundamental governmental services to our citizens. The main services expected of the County government include construction of and maintenance of roads and infrastructure, rural addressing, fire protection services, emergency management, solid waste, property tax assessments, billing and collections, probate services, records and elections, law enforcement, ambulance services, and many others not mentioned. The goal of San Miguel is to provide effective, functional and transparent governmental services equitably to all who live, own property and visit our beautiful communities. In addition to those services, it is the goal of the county to provide a tourist destination by utilizing funding opportunities and revenues to enhance the already naturally beautiful area. The county continues to look at partnerships and project that may collaboratively work towards these goals, while continuing recovery efforts of the tragic Hermit’s Peak Calf Canyon fires and flooding disasters, which have plagued our areas since April 2022.
