Outdoor Recreation Trail+
Taos County
$38,346

The initiative aims to improve access to the popular Horsethief Mesa trails, located on Bureau of Land Management-owned land, by constructing a formal trailhead and parking area, ameliorating current safety issues caused by unorganized parking and trespassing on private land. This project, which has BLM-approved Travel Management Plan, will start with creating off-highway parking in the first phase, followed by developing other elements including a connector road and additional trailhead for accommodating larger groups and campers in subsequent phases. Taos Mountain Bike Association and Enchanted Circle Trails Association (ECTA), managing regional trail projects, will take on key roles; the former will function as the fiscal agent and the latter will coordinate with the BLM in implementation.

2025
Outdoor Recreation Trail+
Taos County
$94,800

This project aims to enhance access to the Horsethief Trails, managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), by repairing roads, erecting barriers to control usage and protect resources, and expanding the trailhead to accommodate more enthusiasts who enjoy the year-round mountain biking, hiking, and horseback riding it offers. The improvements will ease conflicts with private landowners and fulfill the BLM’s Travel Management Plan, ensuring sustainable access with amenities like ample parking, pit toilets, and dispersed camping. This plan is vital to maintaining public access and conservation amidst declining federal budgets, so non-federal financial support is paramount.

Taos Mountain Bike Association (TMBA) was born out of the love for mountain biking and trail stewardship. Our primary concern is to create, enhance and protect riding opportunities in northern New Mexico.

TMBA regularly hosts community events including group rides, campouts, workshops, film screenings and trail maintenance trainings and work days. We have worked closely with land managers, other non-profits and community leaders in the region to plan and maintain nearby trail systems. We are an official steward in partnership with the Carson National Forest of the South Boundary Trail, one of the most popular and beloved epic mountain bike rides covering over 20 miles of high alpine and high desert terrain in Colfax and Taos Counties.
