Village of Taos Ski Valley
Grants Awarded
The program will establish permanent bathroom infrastructure with ELOO waterless, passive solar evaporative toilet systems in a parking lot serving as the gateway to Wheeler Peak and the popular William's Lake trail. This initiative is designed to enhance visitor experience, promote environmental sustainability, and improve public health in the local community.
The Village of Taos Ski Valley, New Mexico, plans to elevate its community appeal through the development of a comprehensive trail and green space plan. The initiative includes creating meaningful and usable connections between community hubs, green spaces, and residential areas, contributing to improved accessibility and encouraging summer visitation. The project also involves maintenance and enhancement of existing trails, which includes relocation and erosion prevention measures, and refurbishing rest points along popular trails using recycled composite materials.
The Village of Taos Ski Valley is a recognized New Mexico municipal government in northcentral New Mexico. It has an established and highly involved Parks and Recreation Committee, which collaborates with regional entities like the Enchanted Circle Trails Association (ECTA) to consider the local and regional impacts of proposed improvements to our recreational infrastructure. The Village, combined with the Taos Ski Valley, Inc. ski resort, exist almost exclusively to provide recreational opportunities throughout the year to our residents, the county, state, and visitors from all over the country and the world. Located within the protected lands of the Carson National Forest, we are dedicated to the preservation of this pristine, high altitude alpine environment, while providing increased safe, low-impact opportunities for the public to visit and experience this unique recreational destination. Our goal is to improve the quality of the experience, increase safety, and minimize the environmental impact of increasing recreation in the valley. To this end, we are working to implement better directional and instructional signage to enhance way finding and understanding. Existing on-site amenities will be repaired and extended to better serve users. Non-vehicular connections between existing trails and open spaces will be developed to improve access and connectivity. Additionally, we will engage both recreational and full-time residential communities in a comprehensive planning process. This approach will maximize existing resources and prioritize future connections, improvements, and expansions to benefit users across all experience levels, sports, and seasons.
