30 x 30 New Mexico

In August 2021, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham signed Executive Order 2021-052, committing New Mexico to the 30 x 30 initiative, which aims to conserve 30% of the state’s lands and waters by 2030. This initiative addresses climate change, biodiversity loss, and the long-term sustainability of New Mexico’s natural resources, recognizing the connection between healthy ecosystems and community well-being.

To meet these objectives, the 30 x 30 Advisory Committee was formed, bringing together seven state agencies, including the New Mexico Outdoor Recreation Division (ORD) and the State Land Office. The committee evaluates existing conservation programs, leverages funding, and designates climate stabilization areas to enhance carbon sequestration and ecosystem resilience.

Since its inception, the initiative has incorporated extensive public and tribal feedback, with over 600 community contributions shaping the state’s conservation approach. These efforts prioritize traditional land uses, tribal sovereignty, and equitable access to protected areas. The first annual New Mexico 30 x 30 Report, published in 2023, outlines key conservation priorities and provides a roadmap for future efforts.

ORD plays an important role in ensuring land conservation efforts align with sustainable outdoor recreation and economic growth. Through programs like the Outdoor Recreation Trails+ Grant program, ORD funds trail restoration, outdoor infrastructure, and recreation access projects that directly support conservation goals. The Outdoor Equity Fund further expands access to public lands for underserved communities, fostering a culture of environmental stewardship among youth and diverse outdoor users.

New Mexico continues to make measurable progress toward 30 x 30, with efforts focused on protecting critical habitats, expanding outdoor recreation opportunities, and balancing conservation with economic sustainability. ORD will continue to lead efforts in infrastructure improvements, supporting outdoor businesses, and integrating sustainable land management into recreation planning.

By ensuring that outdoor recreation and conservation work together, ORD is helping shape a future where New Mexico’s landscapes are both protected and accessible, supporting a thriving outdoor economy while safeguarding the state’s natural heritage.
